Letter from Valley forge

Dear Mom and Dad,

Living like we are right now is very hard. We have no coats, hats, gloves, pants, or shoes. It is very cold up here and all of us are starving. The only thing we have to eat around here is firecake, which isnt very good and doesnt fill me up. A lot of people are sick from the conditions and some are even dying. We are staying in small huts with about 12 men in them. They are not made very well and the wind and cold comes right through the wall. I can't wait to get home and see eveyone.

Washington is doing a good job right now getting through the hard times. He boost our moral and gives us confidence. We know it will be over soon, we just need to stick it out a little longer. He is telling us that with more wins it is only going to get better. Sometimes i find it hard to believe everything he is telling us because of the conditions we are in right now, but he has confidence in us and we know we will come out of this ok.

This revolution was bad. I am not planning on re-inlisting in the spring as much as i would like to serve my country. Im just not sure i could handle this type of tourture again. I think there will be a lot of people who either cant, or wont re-inlist in the spring. I hope nobody ever has to go through something this horiblr again.

Your son,

Derek
